Review: Jane's Addiction bring sweaty, sexy spectacle to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater
Seminal alt-rock heroes Jane's Addiction came to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater Saturday night, and a sold-out crowd of 2,180 was there to greet them. Sean Daly was among them, and he writes:
If you’ve always bought what Jane’s has sold since its late-’80s, early-’90s heyday — especially seminal alt-rock albums Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual — the near-two-hour gig was out-of-this-world, a David Lynchian haymaker on the senses. (By the way, it should be noted that one of the dancing S&M strippers was Etty Lau Farrell aka Perry’s limber wife.)
If the whole thing seemed like a clock-watching slog after the fourth song of the set, the relatively straight-forward slam-dancer Been Caught Stealing, well, you were in for a long haul. Cuts from 2011 LP The Great Escape Artist were even curiouser than the other stuff.

Review: Wilco bring years of rock 'n' roll influences to the Straz Center in Tampa
I last saw Wilco in concert in 1999, some half-dozen albums and members ago.
That Wilco was not the same Wilco that rose from the ashes of alt-country icons Uncle Tupelo in the early ‘90s, nor was it the same Wilco that became critical alt-rock darlings after 2001’s landmark album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, nor was it the same Wilco that played the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa Monday night.
But the secret of Wilco’s success – and the genius of frontman Jeff Tweedy – is that your history with the band matters not. No matter when you find them, you know who it is you’re hearing.
Performing for an all-ages crowd of 1,960, Tweedy led the rollicking six-piece in a more than two-hour revue of the Chicago band’s 18-year songbook. You want feather-soft, gently rollicking folk? You got it. You want head-spinning, avant-garde alternative? You got that, too. And that was just in the first two songs: One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley’s Boyfriend) and Art of Almost.

Photos: Tropical Heatwave 2012 brings funk, soul, alternative and much more to Ybor City
Some of us couldn't resist the allure of Chris Cornell at the Tampa Theatre, many of Tampa Bay's most ardent music fans were out in full force at Tropical Heatwave 2012, which spread more than 70 bands across 13 venues all over Ybor City.
WMNF's annual indie/funk/jam/folk/country/alternative music bacchanal took place Saturday at the Cuban Club, the Ritz Ybor, Crowbar and just about every other place with electricity in Ybor. (We heard varying reports about the crowd at this year's Heatwave -- some said it was less-than-impressive; others said some venues, like Crowbar, were packed. What would you say, dear readers?)
Photographer Andrew Carlton was on hand to snap shots of acts like the Wooly Bushmen (above), Black Taxi, Boom Chick, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, He's My Brother She's My Sister, the Revelations featuring Tre Williams and more. "Just about every show I saw was great," he writes, "from the Garbage-Men (kids using musical instruments made out of toys and cereal boxes), to Black Taxi, which killed it at The Ritz."

Review: Chris Cornell fills the Tampa Theatre with massive pipes and grunge hits
Sometimes a cathedral is called for. Like on Saturday night in Tampa, when Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, a face on grunge music’s Mount Rushmore – and, it has often been argued, its most gifted voice – brought a long-delayed solo acoustic show to a sold-out Tampa Theatre in Tampa.
What better place, what more intimate venue, could there have been to admire Cornell’s Promethean pipes, than Tampa’s ornate, historic cinema house? The stage even looked like a painting, with the white-clad Cornell perched in the center, flanked by seven guitars, a record player and, for reasons that went unexplained, a single red telephone; all framed by the Tampa Theatre’s merlot curtains and opulent décor.
And yet this was no whispering gallery. For two hours, Cornell played to a loud and loose crowd, taking requests, bantering and performing songs from every epoch of his multiplatinum career. ... Read more
Review: All-American Rejects bring energy, nostalgia to A Taste of Pinellas in St. Petersburg
A few days ago, we brought you photos of Ziggy Marley at A Taste of Pinellas at Vinoy Waterfront Park in St. Petersburg. Today, tb-two* correspondent Dylan Dusseault weighs in on the All-American Rejects, who performed on the event's final day. Dylan writes:
I went to this Taste of Pinellas concert expecting a bit of throwback music, but along with that got a surprisingly entertaining show. The Rejects were high energy, technically superb and more than a bit vulgar. I enjoyed the old hits such as Swing, Swing; Move Along; and Paper Heart as well as the new, more adult sound they’ve developed with songs such as Beekeeper’s Daughter and Kids in the Street.

Review / photos: Nasty Savage say farewell alongside metal legends at Crowbar in Ybor City
As the saying goes, all things must come to an end. Saturday was the evening that hometown favorites Nasty Savage played their last show ever. Crowbar in Ybor City packed in a standing-room-only crowd of longtime Tampa metalheads who were there not only to see one last performance, but to wish their longtime friends farewell.
Nasty Savage trace their routes back more than 30 years in Tampa, to the old Sunset Club and beyond. You probably know that Tampa was once the death metal capital of the world, and Nasty Savage was a key ingredient in forming that great reputation. In the crowd for their last show were members of many national and local acts: Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse, Pete Sandoval of Morbid Angel, and all members of Obituary were present, among many others. ... Review / photos: Mighty Mighty Bosstones suit up, bring the ska to the Ritz Ybor in Tampa
Maybe I am naive. Maybe I am just too much into the music to care. But for some reason, as soon as I heard someone say the following phrase, I realized this concert would be reminiscent of a sporting event.
“I can’t believe I’m eating at a joint called New York New York, and going to see the Bosstones. How sacrilegious.”
I turned around and there was a beefy dude wearing his flat cap and standard Boston baseball jersey, swigging a beer and firmly holding a slice of pizza hostage.
I knew the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were from Boston, and I have mad respect for the music that has originated from that area and the influence it’s had on the music world. But come on, people of Boston, this wasn’t a baseball game! As I walked into the Ritz Ybor on Friday, I surely saw folks of all ages, genders and beer gut sizes. ... Read more
Review: The Beach Boys bring good California vibrations to the Straz Center in Tampa
The surviving members of the Beach Boys -- Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks -- are in the midst of a 50th anniversary reunion tour, and on Saturday, they brought a half century's worth of good California vibrations to the west coast of Florida.
Sean Daly joined the Beach Boys at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, and he writes that the show wasn't perfect, but there were moments of transcendence, especially on Wilson-penned hits like Heroes and Villains and I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.
The 2,563 fans in house ate it up — beach bums and music scholars alike — but rest assured this wasn't some moldy oldies gig; Wilson's unlikely inclusion made sure of that. First of all, despite his seeming apathy, Wilson remains a sonic control freak, so his usual solo-touring crew, 10 of the finest musicians on the planet, backed up the Beach Boys, switching gears from Little Deuce Coupe to the wilder Sail on, Sailor to the exploding planets of an encore Good Vibrations.
But more than that, Wilson hasn't really toured with the Beach Boys for more than four decades. Four decades!!! There have been lawsuits and accusations in between, related show-biz ugliness that betrays the shimmering glow of the Boys' high-holy harmonies. Truth be told, this is a history lesson that may never come around again.

50 Concerts
Why would anyone voluntarily attempt to see 50 concerts at 50 different venues in a single summer? Jay Cridlin shrugged and thought: Eh, why not.
