Artist of the day: The Hodaddys

The Hodaddys have more than a few bona fides on their resume. In other incarnations, their pseudonymous members -- guitarist King Pompano, drummer Kneejerk and bassist Sugar Bear -- have played in bands with members of the Cars and Three Dog Night, to name a few.

But really, when you're a surf-rock band, the ultimate seal of approval comes from the legendary Dick Dale, who plays the State Theatre on Friday ... with the Hodaddys opening. Just like they did last summer -- that's video from the show, above. This'll be a triumphant gig for the group, seeing as they just released a new album, Hangin' With..., which contains six surf-rock originals and two covers.

The instrumental Hodaddys have long been regulars at car shows, rockabilly concerts and beach-themed bashes around Tampa Bay. But its members have spread around the country in recent years, making local appearances just a bit rarer.

That'll change this weekend, when the Hodaddys have three shows in the span of 24 hours. First there's the Dick Dale show, Friday night at the State (tickets are $20; click here). Then around noon on Saturday, the trio will set up shop in the parking lot of the Disc Exchange, 6712 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, as part of National Record Store Day. Finally, they'll head to Vinoy Waterfront Park, where they'll perform at the Mainsail Arts Festival. Look for them to take the stage around 3 p.m. ... Read more

Wilson Phillips' Chynna Phillips talks 'Bridesmaids,' hairstyles and covering her famous father's hits

wilson.phillips.jpg

Who can forget Wilson Phillips' epic 1990 video for Hold On, with Chynna Phillips and bandmates Wendy and Carnie Wilson marching down a boardwalk in black power suits? Some day somebody’s gonna make you want to turn around and say goodbye.

The song has risen to sacred pop culture status, sprouting up in comedies like 2004’s Harold and Kumar go to White Castle and 2009’s Spring Breakdown. And in 2011, it had a prominent role in the smash hit Bridesmaids.

“We knew nothing about the story line or who was starring in it,” Phillips said recently by phone. “All we knew was that it was a comedy and they wanted to use Hold On and they were hoping and praying we would agree to be in the movie. We agreed to do it sort of blindly. We showed up on set and saw Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig and we started to put the pieces together. ... We were up until 4 a.m. just singing the song over and over and over again. We just loved it.”

Wilson Phillips -- now preparing an album of cover songs by their famous fathers, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips -- will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St. in Clearwater. Tickets are $49-$79. Click here for details.

Review/photos: Experience Hendrix Tour brings Jimi Hendrix to life at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater

hendrix1.jpg

No one man can fill the shoes, headband and fringe-bedecked vest of James Marshall Hendrix – to say nothing of his famous flaming fretboard.

So a genius idea was born: The Experience Hendrix Tour, an all-star showcase inviting some of the world’s best guitarists to pay homage to the one and only Jimi.

On Thursday, renowned axmen like Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Randolph and members of the Doors, Aerosmith and Los Lobos took the stage at a sold-out Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, each spinning their own electric takes on Jimi’s biggest hits. (That's Randolph with Bootsy Collins above). The 2,180 fans in the house received a rip-roaring stomp through time, hearing songs like Purple Haze, All Along The Watchtower, Voodoo Chile, Hey Joe, Fire and Foxy Lady like never before.

Billy, Ryan and Matthew McGuigan spent their teenage years in Largo. They have aunts, uncles and cousins who live there, and it's the place where their father spent his final days.

On Tuesday, the three will return to Largo as performers in the nationally touring Beatles tribute band Yesterday and Today. The band is performing a free rooftop concert at the Largo Cultural Center to help celebrate the performance hall's 15th anniversary. The program starts at 11:30 a.m., with the band performing at noon. Several food trucks will be selling their specialties in Largo Central Park. Artist of the day: Ivan B. Mendoza

ivan.b.mendoza1.jpg

A native of Peru, Ivan B. Mendoza started playing the guitar at age six and began playing professionally in 1985 in New Jersey. Now living in Port Richey, he decided to challenge himself by recording an album of covers of pop, soul and standard American classics -- all in English.

The album, Love Songs ... From My Guitar to You, features folksy, Latin-tinged versions of songs like the Beatles' Blackbird and Yesterday, Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine and Marc Anthony's I Need To Know. He also covers pop standards like Fly Me To The Moon and Feelings.

The last track on Mendoza's album, Reach for the Stars, features his 11-year-old daughter Gloria on piano and saxophone. "She is playing Reach for the Stars," he writes in the liner notes, "which is what I am encouraging her to do."

Mendoza will celebrate the release of Love Songs... at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Land O'Lakes Community Center, 5401 Land O'Lakes Blvd., Land O'Lakes. The event is free, but seating is limited; click here to RSVP. ... Read more

Review: Dennis DeYoung and the Florida Orchestra bring Styx's greatest hits to life at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater

dennis.deyoung.jpg

Sometimes everything just clicks. That was the case at Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall on Friday, when former Styx singer Dennis DeYoung enlisted the Florida Orchestra to help him recreate some of the biggest songs in rock 'n' roll history.

Stuck in the '80s' Steve Spears -- who interviewed DeYoung for more than an hour to preview the show -- was there, and he described the show as a rousing, life-affirming, everything-you-want-it-to-be extravaganza:

It felt like a 2 1/2 hour reawakening of the spirit as he rolled through tunes like Suite Madame Blue, Lady, Babe, Grand Illusion and more. The crowd was on its feet early and often -- "Testify, Dennis!" -- and it was impossible to even consider anything but the moment we were in.

Dennis just turned 65, but carries himself on stage with the energy of a 25-year-old. His voice still in tip-top condition, he didn't shy away from any high notes. (In fact, he's a stickler for nailing them. After missing the first exploding note of Rockin' the Paradise, he quickly resang the line for us after the tune, blaming the missed note on the "amazing cookies" backstage during intermission. Yes, the crowd adored that.)

Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band to perform free show at Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg

gary.sinise2.jpg

Kevin Costner and Modern West have performed in Tampa Bay. So have Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts. Gary Sinise must have seen those shows and thought: Why not me?

So on April 20, Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform a free concert at Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg as part of the seventh annual Sunscreen Film Festival, held April 19-22 in and around downtown St. Pete.

Named, obviously, for for the actor's Oscar-nominated role in Forrest Gump, the Lt. Dan Band performs covers of classic rock and funk tunes as well as modern hits by acts as diverse as Kelly Clarkson, Zac Brown Band, Evanescence and Beyonce. (Oh, to hear Gary Sinise sing Single Ladies...) The group regularly plays benefits for active duty military, and recently performed for troops in Kuwait. They're also the subject of a documentary, Lt. Dan Band: For The Common Good.

Though the concert is free -- and will also feature an appearance by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders -- you can purchase VIP tickets which include front-row access plus admission to an after party at Push Ultra Lounge. For info on those tickets, click here.

No other celebrity guests have been announced for this year's Sunscreen Film Fest, but a few usually show up. Click here for all the details on the festival.

Artist of the day: The Rockaways

rockaways.jpg

The Rockaways are a tribute band from Spring Hill that specializes in the rock ‘n’ roll of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s — think Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. They’ve also carved out a niche for themselves as the Live-N-Let Die Experience, a Beatles tribute.

The Rockaways have opened for the likes of Molly Hatchet, Blue Oyster Cult, Olivia Newton-John, REO Speedwagon and Carrot Top (!), to name a few. On Saturday, you can check out their “Liven Let Die Tour: Beatles to the Rock’n Blues” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Wesley Chapel Center for the Arts, 30651 Wells Road. Tickets are $10-$15. W.S. 'Fluke' Holland talks 'Million Dollar Quartet' and drumming for legends

million.dollar.quartet.jpg

W.S. "Fluke" Holland was present at one of the most mythical moments in rock 'n' roll history: A Dec. 4, 1956 jam session between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.

"Nobody knew John and Elvis were coming," Holland says. "They just wandered in. And because it was Cash and Presley, it of course turned into a jam session. Later, it became a big event, but it wasn't a big deal at the time. [Engineer] Jack Clement turned on the recorder and left the building, got himself a sandwich! We were all just playing along. We didn't know what they were going to do next."

The jam session has become immortalized in the Broadway smash Million Dollar Quartet, which is playing at the Straz Center through Sunday. No matter where the show goes, Holland, 76 -- who toured with Cash for 40 years and still has a dedicated fan base -- tries to make it to at least one performance a week. Tonight, he'll be in Tampa, where he'll no doubt be invited onstage as a special guest to play drums during Matchbox.

Artist of the day: Don Juceam

donjuceam10.jpgOl' Blue Eyes is long gone, but if you're looking for a taste of the Italian legend, you can always turn to Tampa Bay's top Frank Sinatra impersonator: Don Juceam.

Juceam started doing Sinatra in 2000 after moving to Florida following a career in sales and marketing. "I had always been in a chorus wherever I lived, but it was my time to really develop it when I arrived in Tampa," he said. "I recoreded a lot of favorite Sinatra and Rat Pack favorites, started doing parties as a hobby biz, then it turned into a real biz, and I went full-time in 2004."

Since then, he's performed at big-time corporate weddings, huge Gasparilla parties and much more, delivering Sinatra's standards and songs from other hitmakers like Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett.

On Friday, Juceam will host Frankly Sinatra & Friends, from 7 p.m. to midnight at the T. Pepin Hospitality Centre, 4121 N 50th St., Tampa. There's an Italian dinner and cash bar. It's $50 per person or $90 per couple.

"I’ll be highlighting the great music of Sinatra and the great singers of the American songbook rather than the shallow partier side of the Sinatra lifestyle and will have a very large orchestra to accompany me," he said. "I’m trying to pass on the legacy of this genre to the youngsters today."
