Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, gospel legends bringing 'The King's Men Tour' to USF Sun Dome in Tampa

kirkfranklin.jpg

On Tuesday, the USF Sun Dome held a formal ribbon cutting ceremony, letting the world know that after $35.6 million in renovations, it was ready once again to host major events -- such as this weekend's University of South Flordia graduation ceremony.

We toured the venue a few days earlier, getting an up-close look at the 10,000-seat venue's many improvements: Lounge and VIP areas for students and season ticket holders, entirely renovated concourses, improved seating around the bowl -- and, we're told, a vastly improved sound system.

Global Spectrum, the Philadelphia firm that now manages the Sun Dome, wants to make it a lot more like Orlando's UCF Arena, which it also manages. That's a good thing for local music fans, as the Sun Dome -- which has hosted concerts by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Madonna, U2 and the White Stripes -- has been silent for months, while the UCF Arena has sucked up concerts by Tool, Miranda Lambert, Kid Rock and Avicii.

This summer, the Sun Dome is looking to get back in action. First up is the July 7 Fresh Music Festival, featuring R&B heavyweights Keith Sweat, K-Ci and JoJo, Doug E. Fresh, Guy and SWV. And on Thursday, the Sun Dome announced its second major concert, a gospel mega-tour.

The King's Men Tour will bring gospel titans Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Donnie McClurkin and Israel Houghton, four of the most successful artists in the genre's history, to the USF Sun Dome on Oct. 2. Tickets are $32.50-$62.50, and they're scheduled to go onsale June 1. Click here for details.

That's two shows in the next six months, and we suspect there'll be a lot more to come. Stay tuned.

Afrojack coming to the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa

afrojack.jpg

First it was Kaskade. Now a second world-class DJ is coming to the Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds: Afrojack.

The Dutch DJ/producer, who scored a global smash last year with Pitbull's Give Me Everything, and is currently the DJ List's 17th-rated DJ in the world, will be in Tampa on June 15. R3hab, Shermanology and other acts will also be part of the star-studded bill. Tickets go onsale Friday through Ticketmaster for $33.50. Click here for details.

Electronic music fans are going to have a busy summer, what with shows by Afrojack, Kaskade, Steve Aoki, Rusko, Aviciithe Sunset Music Festival and the just-announced Downtown Digital fest in St. Pete. And who'da thunk the Florida State Fairgrounds, of all places, would become Rave Central this summer?

The Venue closes in Clearwater

flo.rida_.venue_.jpg

If you're wondering why we haven't brought you any news about DJs, rappers and celebrities bringing their talents to The Venue in Clearwater recently, here's your explanation.

The Venue, a sprawling multi-level nightclub on Ulmerton Road, has closed amid myriad financial difficulties. It is being sold and may reopen, its previous owners say, but a sale is taking longer than expected.

This is a blow to the live music scene, in that theclub had, in the past year, expanded its stage in order to bring in more live performances. In addition to its wildly popular service industry night on Mondays, DJs like Avicii, Steve Aoki, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Jazzy Jeff, LMFAO's Sky Blu and Jersey Shore's Pauly D have all performed there. But so have pop, hip-hop and even a few rock acts, such as Flo Rida (above), Iyaz, Paper Tongues, The Script, Miguel, George Clinton, Modern English and Vanilla Ice. Heck, in 2009, Diddy threw his Super Bowl party there.

Review: Tonic, Will Hoge bring Williams Park to life in downtown St. Petersburg

michael.tolcher1.jpg

You might not know this, but there is a statue memorializing war veterans in Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg. You may not know there's a fountain there, either. Heck, you may not have even noticed the giant green amphitheatre that sits across the street from historic First United Church St. Pete.

You may not know all of these things because, well, what reason have you ever had to visit Williams Park? Synonymous with St. Pete's ongoing struggles with the homeless, it's rarely been utilized for big, fun, family-friendly public events.

Enter Backline Music Group, which aims to bring Williams Park to life with a series of free pop and rock festivals throughout 2012. The first took place Saturday, with headliners Tonic, Will Hoge and Michael Tolcher (above).

Organizers had received more than 700 responses for VIP tickets, and were hoping for a crowd of 3,000. An unexpected rain shower on Saturday afternoon no doubt put a dent in those figures, but it didn't matter -- the vibe was fresh, fun and proof that Williams Park can absolutely be reinvented. ... A peek inside the USF Sun Dome's $35.64-million makeover

How weird is it that one of Tampa Bay's biggest concert venues just up and disappeared?

The USF Sun Dome has been MIA from the local concert scene for months now, due to a $35.64-million renovation aimed at turning the home of USF basketball some much-needed improvments, including suites and improved media systems. The goal is to reopen the facility by USF's graduation the first week of May.

Concerts -- no doubt big ones -- will surely follow. Everyone from Madonna to U2 to Frank Sinatra has played the Sun Dome over the decades. In the last few years, The Killers, Drake and Bob Dylan have taken the stage there. While it's safe to say few people probably considered it their favorite local concert venue, there's no doubt it's been missed. Over the past year, tours that might have come to the Sun Dome (Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert, Wiz Khalifa) have instead gone to Orlando's UCF Arena or Estero's Germain Arena.

Check out the video of the improvements above, and click here to read more about it in Greg Auman's story. ... Read more

Kaskade coming to the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa

kaskade.jpg

As spring heats up into summer, we're starting to see more and more big-time DJs come to town. Last week it was Excision at the Ritz Ybor. In the coming weeks, we'll see SBTRKT, Zeds Dead, Rusko, Hot Pink Delorean, Ferry Corsten and Sander Van Doorn come to town. (To say nothing of DJ Pauly D this weekend!)

But this one has us scratching our heads.

According to his Facebook and Ticketmaster, dubstep superstar Kaskade is bringing his "Freaks of Nature Tour" to Tampa on July 13 for a show at ... the Florida State Fairgrounds' Expo Hall.

Review: Gasparilla Music Festival sends Curtis Hixon Park into a Ra Ra Riot

deer.tick_.jpg

Too bad Saturday’s sunset over the University of Tampa was gold and blue. If only it had been bright orange, it would have perfectly matched the logo for the inaugural Gasparilla Music Festival.

That might be the only thing festival organizers might have changed about Saturday’s daylong concert in Tampa, which by almost any standard – the crowd, the music, the weather, setting, the overall good community vibe – has to be called a success.

Organizers were hoping to sell about 3,000 tickets, and were on the verge of passing that figure by mid-afternoon, even with another music festival (Wild Splash) going on across the bay in Clearwater. When the dust settles this week and the coins are counted, the festival should at least break even. And for a first-year event, with a lineup largely devoid of household names, that has to count as a win. ... Read more

Jannus Live, Dallas Bull, Czar among potential party venues during Republican National Convention

czar.jpg

In what might be the most entertaining bit of Republican National Convention news so far this year, the convention's host committee has compiled an official list of potential venues for GOP parties during the last week of August.

Among the 73 venues that made the cut: Czar Vodka Bar. Yes. Ybor City's indie-electro haven for skinny-jeaned, feather-headbanded, trendily coiffed hipsters looking to dance themselves clean. Home to concerts by the likes of The Hold Steady, Kool Keith, Yelawolf, !!!, The Glitch Mob, Peter Bjorn and John, Matt & Kim and -- lest we forget -- after-parties for Fetish Con, pictured above.

We don't care which Republican group books Czar for a party. We now want an invite.

Other concert venues that made the list of 73 make more sense: The Dallas Bull, for sure, as well as Jannus Live, the Club at Treasure Island, the Mahaffey Theater, the Straz Center, the Cuban Club, the Improv, the Venue, Push Ultra Lounge and the Tampa Theatre. We also love the fact that Dolce Vita at Channelside Cinemas -- a hip-hop hangout where this recently happened -- is on the list.

Photos: Ellis Paul kicks off the Live From Lowes concert series at the Don CeSar Beach Resort

ellis.paul6_.jpg

The Don CeSar Beach Resort isn't your typical concert venue, but over the past year, it has welcomed in the occasional singer-songwriter as part of its Live From Lowes concert series. The concept: Pick up a ticket, and enjoy a beachside evening of tunes and music by the Don CeSar pool. It's co-presented by Backline Music Group, the same company that's aiming to bring live music festivals to Williams Park in St. Petersburg. ... Read more
