Artist of the day: poundSalt

Zephyrhills trio poundSalt likes to slap-a-da-bass. In fact, chunky basslines are often the driving force of the group's stoney, funk-rock-reggae blend. They describe themselves as "Chili Peppers and Primus meets Clutch."

Often, you'll catch the group -- singer-guitarist Casey Jones and guitarist Brett Shock (both also play bass) and drummer Jimmy "Jimmyman" Van Bremen -- out playing with fellow Bay-area reggae-rock acts Burning Tree and Unmotivated. But this weekend, they'll be at the Pegasus Lounge in Tampa, performing with Materia Rustka and others at 8;30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5-$7. Click here for details.

In the meantime, check out their video for Window, above. ... Read more

Video: Lil Wayne goes skateboarding at the Skatepark of Tampa

This feels a lot like April, when Lady Gaga took over the city of Tampa, first playing a blockbuster show at the St. Pete Times Forum, then going clubbing and hanging out with Iron Maiden.

Apparently, at some point after his concert in Tampa on Wednesday, Lil Wayne made a quick, early-morning trip (we're talking 3 to 5 a.m.) to the Skatepark of Tampa, where he dropped in and started rolling all over the place with his Cash Money crew. The guys then went on a big shopping spree right after the session, so if you've had your eyes on a slick pair of shoes in the shop this week, you might be out of luck.

"They showed us mad love here at the Skatepark of Tampa, man," Weezy said in the video posted above. "I'm coming back again and again and again."

He wasn't lying: Despite enduring a few wipeouts, Lil Wayne returned to the Skatepark of Tampa the very next day. "Just hit the Skatepark of Tampa up,AGAIN! Props to my manz Chris for that wall ride. Sh!t was sikk!," Weezy tweeted early Friday.

Staffers posted a bunch of photos of Weezy cold chillin' at the SPoT, noting it was a little like the time Dave Chappelle stopped by in 2004. Click here for their full report. And check out another clip of Weezy skateboarding in Tampa after the jump. ... Read more

Lil Kee: For aspiring mogul, doors keep busting wide open

(All this week, we’re spotlighting tbt*’s 2011 Ultimate Local Artists on Soundcheck. Today: Lil Kee.)

In 2007, tbt* spent two months shadowing Tampa rapper, producer and DJ Keith “Lil Kee” Norates for a story about how tough it is for an aspiring club mogul to turn his passion into a career.

Living with his wife and three kids in a rented three-bedroom home, Lil Kee struggled to pay for studio gear, get played on the radio and make his presence known in local clubs.

Three and a half years later, none of that is a problem.

Lil Kee hit the big time in 2010 with Buss It Wide Open, a NSFW club anthem that was a hit in Florida and has received radio airplay around the Southeast. He says he’s even heard it on TV, during a timeout at an NBA game. It enabled him to sign a deal with New York indie label eOne Music, home to Fat Joe, Faith Evans and Bubba Sparxxx, among many others.

And it nudged him ever closer to that elusive dream of being a mogul.

“Where I wanted to be then, that’s where I’m at now,” he said. “Where I want to be now is, I want to be Diddy — an entrepreneur with a clothing line, a record label, stuff like that.”

There’s no way that can happen, right? Well, consider where Lil Kee started. ... Read more
