2012 Tropical Heatwave lineup: Chuck Prophet, Bright Light Social Hour, the Growlers and more
How about 73 artists spread across 13 stages? Will that do it for you?
The lineup for the 31st annual Tropical Heatwave, coming May 12, has been out for a while, but now we have the schedule of performance times and venues. The big news is the scope of the thing -- for the first time, Heatwave will spread from the Cuban Club all the way to the Sodom and Gomorrah that is Seventh Avenue, with concerts at the Bricks and two stages inside the Ritz Ybor. What is this world coming to when Tampa's weirdest music fest settles on Ybor's clubbiest drag? Heck, why doesn't WMNF just go ahead and book Prana and Coyote Ugly while they're at it?
The music lineup offers, as usual, a who's who of local artists, including several (The Groves, Rebekah Pulley and Rob Pastore, Have Gun, Will Travel, Amber Lynn Nicol, Kaleigh Baker) who performed at the Gasparilla Music Festival. Also notable: Heatwave will mark the first local performance by Tallhart (formerly Marksmen) since they signed to Equal Vision Records in January.
As for the nationals: It ain't a WMNF party if folk-blues singer-songwriter Chuck Prophet (above) isn't involved. We're hearing lots of buzz about SoCal "beach goth" group The Growlers. And at this point, Austin, Texas group the Bright Light Social Hour might as well call themselves a Tampa Bay band -- they've played every venue from Skipper's to the Hub to the State Theatre, and have built up a huge following in this area.
Tickets to Tropical Heatwave 2012 are $30 advance, $40 at the door, with youth (ages 12-20) tickets $12. For lots more details, including the full lineup, click here.
