97X Next Big Thing lineup: Black Keys, Against Me!, Chevelle, Switchfoot and more
Every year we eagerly anticipate the release of information about 97X Next Big Thing, the annual hard rock concert that hits the 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre in Tampa. Today we go it, and we have to say ... meh?
Don't get us wrong: There are some severely awesome bands coming to this year's show, which is scheduled for Dec. 5 at the Gary. Among them: Perennial Greatest Band Alive candidate the Black Keys, above; Florida ragers Against Me! and Christian dudes Switchfoot, who will be making their triumphant return to the amphitheatre following an incident with the cops there in August.
The rest of the lineup, though? Lots of them just played here, or will soon perform here: Sick Puppies, Cage the Elephant, Neon Trees, Paper Tongues. Even the Black Keys, Against Me! and Switchfoot have all played Tampa in the past three months. Chevelle is a solid choice; Finger Eleven, not so much. It's nice to see Ocala's A Day To Remember on the bill. And try though you might, let's not forget American Bang or the Dirty Heads.
There are ups and downs each year, we suppose. Last year's lineup, with Rise Against, 30 Seconds to Mars, Metric and Panic at the Disco was tough to beat.
And remember: This is the lineup TODAY. 97X promises to add more acts; you can bet a couple of major names will be among them. We'll reserve final judgment until we see the complete package. For now, tickets go onsale Friday, starting at $30. Click here for all the details.
And don't forget to vote in the Local Band Contest, giving your group a shot to perform alongside all the heavy hitters listed here.
