There is a segment of the population -- still a fairly large segment, we'll admit -- who still thinks of Adam Carolla as a knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, misogynist, xenophobic caveman with a third-grader's sense of humor. The Man Show, Crank Yankers, Loveline ... it ain't exactly the News from Lake Wobegon.

You can go ahead and keep thinking that, if you want. But you're wrong.

In the past two and a half years, Carolla's popularity has exploded thanks to The Adam Carolla Show, his daily podcast that consistently ranks among the most downloaded programs on iTunes. Booking guests ranging from Albert Brooks to Sammy Hagar to Alec Baldwin to Larry Flynt, Carolla has opened the nation's ears to his wholly unique comedic sensibility, a sort of everyman's improv through which Carolla is able to build lengthy, spur-of-the-moment rants on almost any topic you can throw at him. When it comes to off-the-cuff, pitch-perfect observations, there's not another comic in his league.

The success of The Adam Carolla Show has resulted in a book deal, several TV pilots and a string of incresingly popular live podcasts and stand-up shows, first in clubs around Southern California and now in huge theatres across the country.

Which brings us to this: On Oct. 1, The Adam Carolla Show is coming to Tampa.

Carolla and company will perform at the Straz Center in Tampa at 8 p.m. Oct 1. Tickets start at $24.50. Click here for details.

Regular podcast listeners know that Carolla's live podcasts are multimedia affairs, with slideshows and audience participation (for example, in the game "What Can't Adam Complain About," fans pitch topics to get the host off on a rant. Sometimes he'll have guests pop up onstage or call in, too.
