American Idol's Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox spark Tampa-Toledo radio feud
When the Rays battled the Phillies in the 2008 World Series, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard made a friendly wager against the mayor of Philadelphia. Now that St. Petersburg native Michael Lynche and Crystal Bowersox of Toledo, Ohio, are favored on American Idol, a similar beef is developing between two of the cities' radio stations.
On Wednesday, morning show host Andrew Z of the Toledo Top 40 station 92.5 Kiss FM talked some smack about Lynche. Andrew and his crew made the comments to Carlos Diaz, the Extra correspondent who does the gossip report on both Kiss FM and the Tampa Bay hip-hop station Wild 94.1 FM.
Diaz relayed the trash-talk to the cast of Wild's Orlando and the Freak Show, who retaliated with insults against everything from the Toledo station's staff to Bowersox's teeth. Here, in four parts, is how things went down. (Shout-out to Wild's Special Ed for supplying the audio.)
"It was tongue-in-cheek," Wild host Orlando Davis told tbt*."We're used to playing the dozens. We can do 'your mama' jokes all day."
But on Wednesday night, Lynche was nearly ejected from American Idol. The show's judges used their veto power to save him.
Did the Wild deejays worry that their mouths had written a check Lynche couldn't cash?
"Not really," Davis said. "I'm not going to throw stones at American Idol, but I think American Idol set that up."
The radio shows continued trading zingers all week via Diaz. On Monday, both programs are expected to broadcast a song parody about the good-natured rivalry. "Monday's going to be pretty explosive, from what I hear," Davis said.
The stations didn't make an official bet over the outcome of American Idol, but bragging rights are at stake. Said Davis, "We're just going off of the fact that our city and our singer is better than theirs."
