Antiwarpt Music Festival preview: How organizers built a Florida fest from the ground up
It began as a cheeky alternative to the Vans Warped Tour. But five local music figures in the local music scene -- graphic designer S. Bradley Askew, concert promoters Phil Benito and Sean O'Brien and Daddy Kool Records' Manny Kool and Anna Serena -- thought it could be much more than that.
Three years later, the third annual Antiwarpt Music Festival will bring nearly 100 bands to 10 venues in downtown St. Petersburg on Saturday. It has become a must-attend event in the local music scene, even outshining longer-established events like Tropical Heatwave.
“We have so much awesome talent in this town,” said Kool, the record shop’s manager. “We don’t have to be Austin, Portland or Chicago to host a huge event with a ton of bands.”
