Artist of the day: The Absence

There's a long and proud tradition of death metal in Tampa, and the latest heirs to the throne might be The Absence.

Vocalist Jamie Stewart, guitarists Patrick Pintavalle and Peter Joseph, bassist Mike Leon and drummer Justin Reynolds -- bring a speed-freak intensity to the area's thrash-metal scene. With two guitarists, the sound is full and hefty, but not without tons of technical precision.

Their fret-melting 2007 album Riders of the Plague included a stomping, crunching cover of Testament's Into the Pit. They've been providing video diaries about the production of their upcoming album Enemies Unbound -- see here and here -- and promise it'll be as heavy as you want it.

Unfortunately, Reynolds was in a nasty car accident in Sarasota last week, injuring his back and neck. He'll be temporarily replaced by Tampa drummer Matt Solka.

You can check out The Absence on Friday, when they perform at 7 p.m. at Crowbar in Ybor City alongside Ovid's Withering, Promise Me Hell and more. Tickets are $10. Click here for details.
