Artist of the day: The Applebutter Express
Don't tell us that when you hear the words "good time ukulele funk," you don't feel like dancing.
Kyle Biss and Shannon Moore are The Applebutter Express, who promise exactly that in their live shows. Their sound is a danceable blend of country, bluegrass and jam-band grooves. They do fresh 'n' funky little covers of classic rock songs like Spirit in the Sky and the Allman Brothers' Whipping Post, but our favorite might be the Grateful Dead's Tennessee Jed. Get a taste of their music via the many videos they've posted to Facebook.
As you might expect, their sound goes over well at the hippie-friendly Skipper's Smokehouse and other local pubs. On Saturday, you can check them out at the Ale and the Witch in St. Pete, as they kick off the pub's inaugural "Brewgrass" festival at 5 p.m. Other artists on the bill include Between Bluffs, Ramblegrass, Gypsy Wind, Spacegrass and Bobby Miller and the Virginia Dare Devils.
