Artist of the day: Ashley Jones

ashley.jones_.jpgTampa singer-songwriter Ashley Jones has taken quite the circuitous route to music success.

After writing her first song at age 7, and learning guitar at 13, she studied music at college in Tallahassee before moving to New York, where she performed at famed stages like the Knitting Factory. After a quick move back to Florida to care for her ailing father, Jones went to Rwanda, where she had directed previous charitable efforts, and wanted to tell the stories of the Rwandan children through her music. The result was The World Should See Her Face, an eight-song EP about her time in Africa.

While in Rwanda, Jones met Patasse Muhire, the man who would become her percussionist — and also her husband. Now back in America, she’s pursuing her goal of writing and recording emotive folk-pop music. She has had some success — in 2010, she won a contest to perform at the Lilith Fair tour stop in Tampa, before the concert was canceled.

On Wednesday, Jones will perform at the Renaissance Tampa International Plaza Hotel, inside International Plaza mall. Her free performance is 5 to 7 p.m. There will be $5 drinks and appetizers.
