Artist of the day: Between the Trees
Central Florida produces some pretty good pop-rock bands (see: Matchbox Twenty, Anberlin, Copeland), and Orlando's Between the Trees are looking to continue the tradition.
Singer-guitarist Ryan Kirkland, drummer Josh Butler and bassist Jeremy Butler have pulled several stints on the Warped Tour and signed with Universal in 2007, but are now once again releasing music on Bonded Records. Their 2009 CD, is loaded with catchy piano- and guitar-driven pop singles. It sounds a lot like Keane or The Fray, thanks in no small part to Kirkland's vocal resemblance to Fray singer Isaac Slade on songs like Story Of A Boy and We Can Try.
In October, We Can Try appeared on Nickelodeon's Degrassi, and they're strong supporters of the teen anti-suicide and depression movement To Write Love On Her Arms, even writing a couple of songs inspired by Renee Yohe, the Orlando teenager whose struggles led to the creation of TWLOHA. Kirkland performed at a TWLOHA conference in Orlando earlier this month, and the band is now heading out on a nationwide tour.
Between the Trees performs Saturday at Crowbar alongside Rookie of the Year, Action Item and InPassing. The show starts at 6 p.m.; tickets are $10-$12.
