Artist of the day: The Black Roses

(All week on Soundcheck, we’re spotlighting the videos of Ryan Zarra, the director behind St. Pete Beat. His lush videos capture local performers in unusual venues, and also let their musicianship and personality shine through in unexpected ways. Today: The Black Roses.)

Singer-guitarist Drew Anthony and drummer Fona Erdem are the Black Roses, “a blendered concoction of raw punk, screeching blues and a dash of pure rock and roll,” their website states. If that sounds like some unholy combination of the White Stripes and Black Keys, that’s not far off base. Maybe the name is a tribute? Any of the songs on their self-titled live demo (available for free download here) could pass for an early Jack White concoction.

Their St. Pete Beat video for the song Devil on Both my Shoulders (Voodoo Blood Blues) takes them to a historic home in St. Pete’s Roser Park. Yes, there is a naked man in the video, but the only naughty bits you’ll see are Anthony’s gnarly guitar riffs. If you like killer-looking vintage mics, you’ll want to check it out.
