Artist of the day: Black Zeppa

(All week on Soundcheck, we’re spotlighting the videos of Ryan Zarra, the director behind St. Pete Beat. His lush videos capture local performers in unusual venues, and also let their musicianship and personality shine through in unexpected ways. Today: Black Zeppa.)

Curtis Hunt Jr., a.k.a. Black Zeppa, has been called “one of the few underground gems of St. Pete,” thanks to his original style of beatboxing and freestyling. The Georgia-born artist is into a myriad of styles and genres, from hip hop and soul to jazz and rock (he’s collaborated with local band Fall On Purpose), and he’s into skateboarding.

In Black Zeppa’s St. Pete Beat video, he is seen popping and scratching on a darkened corner of the 'Burg (Central Avenue and Eighth Street), back-lit by orange and yellow lampposts, as curious onlookers pass by.
