Artist of the day: Bobby Smith

Plenty of local artists have donated their time and talents to benefit victims of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Some have even written songs about it.

One such artist is singer-songwriter Bobby Smith, an Indiana native who has recorded rock and contemporary Christian songs since he was 15. He's a frequent bar performer who plays pop and classic rock standards along the beach.

But recently, he was moved to write and record a song to highlight the damage caused by the oil spill: Please Save Our Beaches, a sax-and-piano-driven singalong that encourages people to remember the birds and beaches affected by the crude. From the lyrics:

A tragedy in the making / a paradise we call home / The waves washing onto the shore / the seagulls lost to roam /Helplessly looking for an end / to preserve our way of life / a fragile resource we can't ignore / let's all now make things right.

Sample the video above, and if you like what you hear, buy a copy of the song for $1.99 at Smith's website.
