Artist of the day: Bogus Pomp

Of course. With Halloween coming this weekend, who else would it be?

To call Bogus Pomp a Frank Zappa cover band would be accurate, but it wouldn't tell anything close to the whole story of this ensemble, which varies in number. Guitarist Jerry Outlaw has led his band of merry Zappaphiles to performances around the globe, including stints in Germany and gigs with the Florida Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic. They have performed with former Zappa vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock, but Bogus Pomp is perhaps best known for Zappaween, the band's annual October Zapstravaganza.

"We approach it in the way an orchestra might approach the music of Bach," Outlaw told tbt* earlier this year. "You wouldn't call an orchestra a Bach tribute band, but they do it because it's important."

This year, Zappaween falls on a Saturday, so expect even more wild and crazy adventures than usual. The show is at 8 p.m. at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg. Tickets are $20. Click here for details.
