Artist of the day: Breakdown

Back in 2007, Ryan McGown, a.k.a. Breakdown, was one of tbt*’s first-ever class of Ultimate Local Artists. The soulful, high-minded hip-hop he exhibited on debut album Social Studies was comparable to Mos Def, A Tribe Called Quest and Common. A member of the Gwan Massive collective, he rhymed about issues both poignant and personal, from his late mother to the war in Iraq.

But since then, Breakdown has sort of fallen off our radar. So we were excited to see on his Facebook page that he’s got a brand new video for the song Been A Minute, from his upcoming album So Far Away. And while we’re not calling it a comeback, we do think it’s interesting that McGown says he’s “back from the brink of extinction.” On his Bandcamp site, you can preview several new tracks from So Far Away, as well as download his mixtapes

On Saturday, Breakdown will perform with DP, Big Blu House, Effex and the Boom Bap Eclectic at New World Brewery in Ybor City. Tickets are $7-$9. Click here for info.
