Artist of the day: Candy Bars

Warm 'n' fuzzy psychedelic duo Candy Bars (Daniel Martinez on vocals and guitar, Ryan Hastings on drums) play midtempo indie pop hymns whose lyrics sometimes border on the inscrutable.

Candy Bars have been popular around Tampa Bay for some time, attracting attention from national music blogs like Stereogum as far back as 2006, when they were still a trio. Former member Melissa Castellano (now Grady) left the group in 2007, but rejoined the group onstage in 2008 for what was rumored to be a farewell show ... but even though the band doesn't play out very often, that clearly wasn't the case.

The band will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, with Venice Is Sinking and the Pauses at New World Brewery in Ybor City. Tickets are $7. And the first 50 folks through the door get a free beer, courtesy of PBR.
