Artist of the day: Christie Lenee
When we did our “50 concerts at 50 venues” experiment a couple of summers ago, one of the unexpected highlights was a performance by jam-folk singer-songwriter Christie Lenee at Yeoman’s Road Pub in Davis Islands. Late at night, when the bar was nearly empty, the classically trained guitarist went solo for three sensational acoustic instrumental compositions, one of which was unfinished. She plucked, she smacked, she tapped, she riffed. It was awesome.
Since then, Lenee has continued pushing her jammy, earthy roots-pop in new directions. Dave Matthews, Dar Williams and the Indigo Girls are still good starting points, but one of her new songs, Before I Go, is a lush, bubbly trek through John Mayer territory, and Golden Doors lays on a mighty Grace Potter-style organ. And the track Give and Take In features saxwork from Jeff Coffin of Dave Matthews Band and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
On Friday, Lenee will perform some of her new songs at the Hideaway Cafe in St. Petersburg. Showtime is 8 p.m.; tickets are $10. Click here.
