Artist of the day: City Groove

All week on Soundcheck we’ll be spotlighting some of the local artists performing at this year’s Tropical Heatwave on Saturday. Today: City Groove.
One thing you gotta love about Tropical Heatwave is how much it embraces unexpected performers. Case in point: City Groove.
This slow-burning, smooth-talking R&B collective — singer Deejay Young, drummer Darrell Lindsey, saxophonist Marlon Boone, keyboardists Aaron Collins and A.J. Kennedy and bassist Jesse Oats — delivers hotter-than-hot slow jams a la John Legend, Maxwell or Musiq Soulchild. Since founding in 2003, the group’s mix of organ and sax, combined with Young’s soulful falsetto, has made them a popular hire for weddings and events around the area, not to mention festivals like Tropical Heatwave.
If you feel like lovin’ it up to some super-sexy tunes, check out City Groove at 10:50 p.m. in the Cuban Club Ballroom.
