Artist of the day: Common Ground

Today, it might be hard to imagine one of the best jazz clubs in Tampa Bay was actually situated on the beach. But back in the '80s, the Hurricane bar and restaurant in Pass-a-Grille used to host jazz music five nights a week, and the starring act was acoustic band Common Ground.

Drummer Dave Hardman, pianist Richard Drexler (above) saxophonist and flute man David Moss and bassist Mark Neuenschwander formed the core of the group (co-leader Dann Reno died from cancer in December 1988) and earned quite a following in the local jazz scene.

"There are only a handful of (clubs) in the entire country where a house band can come in five nights a week and do what they want without worrying about (audience) reaction," Hardman told the St. Petersburg Times in 1987. "We don't play with the idea of trying to please everybody. We play for ourselves - and the conviction in the work hopefully comes across as entertaining."

On Sunday, Common Ground will reunite for a concert at the Palladium in St. Petersburg. The show is at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20. Click here for details.
