Artist of the day: Crescendo
Crescendo isn't your average choral group. Founded in 1991, this lesbian choral group has performed in diverse venues around Tampa Bay, spreading a message of tolerance and unity. Under the artistic direction of Sunny Hall, it exists on donations, and is a member of GALA Choruses, the national alliance for gay and lesbian choruses. Today there are about 40 members.
In July, Crescendo will travel to Chicago for the Sister Singers Choral Festival, featuring choruses from around the country. This weekend, there's a benefit concert at Skipper's Smokehouse to raise money for Crescendo's travel costs.
The event, "Sisters Singing for Sisters," is 5 to 9 p.m. Sundy at Skipper's in Tampa. A group of local artists, including Anne Van Atta, Maggie Council, Judy Tampa, Natty Moss Bond and Lizz Straight, will perform at the event, which will be hosted by WMNF DJs. Tickets are $10-$13.
Crescendo only performs a handful of times per year around Tampa Bay, so this is a unique opportunity to see them live.
