Artist of the day: The Demo Rats
The Demo Rats are an abrasive, politically driven punk-rock group that has been blitzing the bay area with its aural onslaught in one incarnation or another for the better part of 20 years. Leader and frontman/vocalist Johnny Zoltar is a powerhouse who spits and sweats his heart out. Bizarro Jesus, guitar; Adrian Baptist, drums; and Erawk Bachand, bass, accompany him. Sonically, they herald back to the days of the Dayglo Abortions, the Stupids, Suicidal Tendencies and M.O.D.
How did the name the Demo Rats came about?
“We kept makin’ demos,” said Zoltar. “It’s ridiculous how many songs we have. I think we counted like 40 or 50 songs. … They go all the way back, and there was so much variance that, God, we’re just a bunch of f--kin’ demo rats. Thought, that’s a great name for a band. And we looked it up and saw it was like a political thing. So I was like, ‘’Oh, that sounds even better!’’
