Artist of the day: The Dex Romweber Duo
They may be from North Carolina, and they may be a huge influence on Jack White, but the Dex Romweber Duo is a group familiar to local music fans.
Singer-guitarist Dex Romweber and his sister/drummer Sara play rootsy rockabilly music that veers from punk to folk. And for years, they’ve been represented by St. Petersburg’s Steele Management, which means they’re frequent performers in these parts. For anyone who was a fan of Romweber’s first group, the seminal blues-rock combo the Flat Duo Jets, this is a good thing.
This summer they released Is That You In The Blue? via Bloodshot Records. It’s an unrepentantly sinister collection that sounds like the soundtrack to almost any Quentin Tarantino movie. In a review, Spin said Romweber was still “ruler of his own bossa nova rockabilly kingdom, skipping from surf-guitar rave-ups to spacey instrumentals to sepulchral balladry, with the occasional Xavier Cugat cover tossed in.”
On Friday, they’ll be performing at Dave’s Aqua Lounge, 10820 Gandy Blvd., St. Petersburg, alongside the Mojo Gurus and the Lambasters. Tickts are $10.
