DJ Grimey says he got his name not from East London grime, but from New York hip-hop, "which is considered grimy, or a dirty-style type of music."

Indeed, Grimey (a.k.a. Anthony J. Cotto) likes to spin old-school hip-hop with a deep take-no-prisoners feel: Big Pun, DMX, Mobb Deep, Jadakiss. But he also mixes in dancehall, reggaeton and Latin music, which has made him a popular DJ at clubs like studio Inc. (Click here for a review of a set last summer by DJ Grimey and others with Jadiel at Studio Inc.)

In 2007, he founded a crew, Regulator DJs, along with DJ Aze and DJ June, that he says is attracting attention from DJs worldwide. On April 9, they launched a new Web site for the project.

You can often catch him at Studio Inc., where he's a regular presence in the DJ booth. He'll be there on April 22, performing before a concert by Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Coscu.
