Artist of the day: The Downshifters

If you like combustible punk rock and furious rockabilly and combustible punk riffage, you’ll dig the Downshifters, a Bradenton trio inspired by Social Distortion and Motorhead that has been kicking asses up and down Florida for more than a decade. The group has played a bundle of WMNF concerts, including Tropical Heatwave, but to really get the full effect, you should catch them at an event like the Heatstroke Hot Rod Hoedown, a popular rockabilly festival that’ll return for the ninth time this weekend. Singer-guitarist Paxton “P-Man” Richards, who is also organizing the event, will have his punky snarl in full effect.

The Heatstroke Hot Rod Hoedown will take place from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday at Classic Cycle Paint, 721 Seventh Ave. W, Bradenton. Tickets are $10, and the event benefits Sarasota community radio stateion WSLR-96.5. Click here for details.
