Artist of the day: The Empty Hats
In honor of St. Patrick's Day next week, we're paying tribute to one of the Bay area's top Celtic-inspired bands: The Empty Hats
The folk band — singer-guitarist Carl Asch, guitarist Gary Mazzu, bodhran/tambourine player Lynda Kavy and fiddler Vicki Scuteri — have been playing Renaissance fairs, Celtic fests and other out-there venues for the past 10 years in Tampa Bay. The classically trained musicians have five CDs to their credit, all of which make fine accompaniment to a leg of lamb and flagon of mead. Think jaunty drinking anthems and jig-worthy singalongs.
Click here to order their latest CD, simply titled 5. "There are some originals and some traditional tunes and even an embedded video of a song that must be seen to be appreciated," Asch said.
The band has a big gig at the Villages on St. Patty's Day, but you will have two opportunities to catch them locally in the next couple of weeks. On March 16, they're playing at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa, alongside Celticopia. The show is at 8 p.m.; tickets are $10. Click here for details. And on March 27, they're playing at the Dubliner in Westchase.
