Artist of the day: The Florida Mountain Boys

"But wait," you say. "There are no mountains in Florida!"

Tell it to the Florida Mountain Boys, a group of self-described "raggedy old hobos and raucous roustabouts" from around the Tampa Bay area who delight in pickin' and grinnin' with abandon.

Playing a wild, jam-friendly bluegrass blend (they list Yonder Mountain String Band and the Grateful Dead as influences), Austin Kennedy, Bob Bailey, Andy Karpay, Joe Trivette and Ken Bailey blend bass, fiddle, banjo, dobro and much more into a fun-filled hootenanny at least once a week at various venues around Tampa Bay, often with friends joining in.

On Saturday, the Florida Mountain Boys will perform at Skipper's Smokehouse for "Still Crazy After All These Years: The Paul Simon 70th Birthday Tribute." Many other bands are on the bill. The show starts at 3:30 p.m., and tickets are $12-$15. Click here for details.
