Artist of the day: Genghis Flan

Sometimes when we here at SoundcheckCorp. are looking for local acts to spotlight as Artists of the Day, we’ll come across a band we’ve never heard of, but their name is so great we automatically decide to shove them into the spotlight.

Such was the case with Genghis Flan.

Believe it or not, the Seminole Heights group is somehow not a ska, punk or reggae-rock band. In fact, the group — singer-guitarists Scott Lavan Miller and Ryan Statt, bassist Jimmy Calus and drummer Peter Leon — play earthy Americana folk with a bit of western, Calexico-style flavor. Their acoustic take on Death Cab For Cutie’s Cath... is a winner. “Taste the sweet, smooth musicality — become a Flanatic!” they write in their bio. Done and done!

On Friday, Genghis Flan will perform with Frantic Honey, 16 Penny and others starting at 8:30 p.m. at the Pegasus Lounge in Tampa. Tickets are $5-$7. Click here.
