Artist of the day: Geri X
(Welcome to Kickstarter week on Soundcheck! This week we're spotlighting artists with recent or ongoing projects on Kickstarter.com. Today: St. Petersburg singer-songwriter Geri X.)
What $5 got you: A Geri X guitar pick, sticker and poster.
St. Pete singer-songwriter Geri X is pretty popular around town. But raising more than five times what you asked for?
“I really wasn’t expecting to get any of it,” said Geri X. Especially considering the last time she attempted a Kickstarter campaign — $300 to cover touring costs — she failed miserably.
This time, Geri spent a lot of time researching what other successful Kickstarter campaigners did. She made her rewards more personal (a personalized voice-mail message, a childhood photo), recorded a Kickstarter video and pushed the project through social media. Within three hours of launching her campaign, it was fully funded. “It’s mind-blowing to think that people believe in you so much,” she said.
Her advice to future Kickstarters: “Don’t ask for something you don’t need. Be honest, and don’t be greedy.” Also, keep your fans updated on your project every time you pass a certain milestone ($1,000, $1,500, $2,000, etc.). Geri blogged from the road, and always reminded people about the campaign. “The No. 1 thing people want is a personal connection with the artist,” she said.
To connect with Geri yourself, head to Ybor City this weekend. She’ll hold a release party for Work is the Wolf at 8 p.m. Friday at Crowbar, 1812 N 17th St., Ybor City. Have Gun, Will Travel and The Deep Dark Woods will also play. Tickets are $7-$10. Click here.
