Tool and System of a Down are obvious comparisons when you listen to Clearwater prog-metal quartet Gladiator.

All the elements are there -- jazzlike progressions that melt into razorlike chords, mind-warping time signatures, a shadow of doom and mystery that shrouds the music. The only thing that's missing are the vocals -- the instrumental Gladiator is all about the music.

Interestingly, this wasn't entirely by choice. The band founded with a different lineup in 2006 as Into Ruins, which had more of a metalcore sound. In 2009, the band's sound started "moving more and more towards the jazz-fusion metal-ness," said guitarist Joshua Adams, and their singer left the band. The group -- Adams, guitarist Spencer Himelberger, bassist Cabe Crisler and drummer Chris Wiley -- decided to keep going as a four-piece, sans singer, and the rest is history.

On Friday, Gladiator will celebrate the release of their spacey new album, Circular Reasoning, with a show at 7 p.m. at Orpheum with Shadows of the Statue, Electric Speedbump and Variety Workshop. All Ages.

Check out a track from Circular Reasoning below.
