Artist of the day: Greenland is Melting

Given the popularity of young groups like the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons, Gainesville's Greenland is Melting are in a good place.

The group plays a rootsy style of traditional bluegrass with a modern twist or two. Think Old Crow Medicine Show, with just a touch of Gainesville pop-punk harmonies and attitude -- especially on the part of banjoist Karl Seltzer, whose vocals wouldn't feel out of place in a celtic punk band. He's joined by guitarist Shaun Pereira and standup bassist Will Dueease.

On Saturday, Greenland is Melting is scheduled to perform at WMNF's sixth annual Americana Fest at Skipper's Smokehouse. The concert kicks off at 4 p.m. (Greenland is Melting will go on at 4:45) and features artists like Rebekah Pulley, Ted Lukas, Alexander and the Grapes and more. Click here for details.

After that, look for the band at a kickoff party to the Antiwarpt Festival in St. Petersburg on July 29. And if that isn't enough to tide you over, head to their website, where you can download their albums Folk Songs From Florida and Our Hearts Are Gold, Our Grass Is Blue for free.
