Artist of the day: Gypsy Wind

Fans of the Duhks and Two Man Gentleman Band may dig Gypsy Wind, who specialize in a form of newgrass, swing and jazz. Perhaps what sets them apart might be the flute played by singer and guitarist Kristen Oliphant. It can give Gypsy Wind’s music a distinctly hippieish vibe, but their music can run the gamut from Celtic folk to acoustic blues.

The band has a formidable musical background. Michael Godwin (guitar, mandolin, banjo) ahs performed with and opened for the likes of Bill Monroe, Crosby Stills and Nash, Little Feat and Pat Metheny Group. Bassist Rob Williams rounds out the group, and has been playing bluegrass for years.

In 2010, the group released their second CD, Different Roads; click here to get it. On Friday, watch for Gypsy Wind from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Dunedin Smokehouse, 471 Main St., Dunedin. Click here for more upcoming dates.
