Artist of the day: Halcyon

halcyon tampa skippers smokehouse

For our inaugural Artist of the Day, we're paying tribute for a band that's been rocking Tampa concert stages since the '80s. Skipper’s Smokehouse regulars Stephanie Callahan and Deb Hunseder of St. Pete's Halcyon have been slinging their popular brand of passionate acoustic folk-pop around Tampa Bay (and the entire southeast) for two decades — in fact, they’ve got a 20th-anniversary show coming up at Skipper’s on May 16. Like the Indigo Girls (to whom they’re often compared), Callahan and Hunseder are gay, and they have a strong lesbian following. But their gigs regularly draw hundreds of fans of all orientations. They’re among the few local musicians who can truly be called icons. Check 'em out at 8 p.m. March 21 at Skipper's; tickets are $12.

Check out the playlist on the right to listen to an mp3 of Halcyon's "Margaret Says."
