Helado Negro means "black ice cream" in Spanish. We're not sure how appetizing that sounds. But the musician who goes by the same name is definitely a sweet, tasty summer treat.

Roberto Carlos Lange grew up in South Florida, the son of Ecuadoran immigrants. And he's returning to the Sunshine State this week to share his uniquely freaky Latin folk sound.

His new album Canta Lechuza is a trippy blend of lush folk rhythms and Animal Collective-style freak-rock, all wrapped up in Lange's warm falsetto. He is signed to Asthmatic Kitty, the home of Sufjan Stevens -- and we have no doubt that anyone who digs Stevens' music, particularly his latest, The Age of Adz, will also dig Helado Negro.

Go see him at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Crowbar, opening for Junip (and yes, we think Jose Gonzalez fans will enjoy Helado Negro, too). Tickets are $12-$15. Click here for details.

And don't say nothing cool ever came from Florida, okay? Between Helado Negro, Twin Shadow (Venice) and Sleigh Bells (Pahokee), we've got Pitchfork cred, too!
