Artist of the day: The Hodaddys
The Hodaddys have more than a few bona fides on their resume. In other incarnations, their pseudonymous members -- guitarist King Pompano, drummer Kneejerk and bassist Sugar Bear -- have played in bands with members of the Cars and Three Dog Night, to name a few.
But really, when you're a surf-rock band, the ultimate seal of approval comes from the legendary Dick Dale, who plays the State Theatre on Friday ... with the Hodaddys opening. Just like they did last summer -- that's video from the show, above. This'll be a triumphant gig for the group, seeing as they just released a new album, Hangin' With..., which contains six surf-rock originals and two covers.
The instrumental Hodaddys have long been regulars at car shows, rockabilly concerts and beach-themed bashes around Tampa Bay. But its members have spread around the country in recent years, making local appearances just a bit rarer.
That'll change this weekend, when the Hodaddys have three shows in the span of 24 hours. First there's the Dick Dale show, Friday night at the State (tickets are $20; click here). Then around noon on Saturday, the trio will set up shop in the parking lot of the Disc Exchange, 6712 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, as part of National Record Store Day. Finally, they'll head to Vinoy Waterfront Park, where they'll perform at the Mainsail Arts Festival. Look for them to take the stage around 3 p.m.
