Artist of the day: Impulse
This week, Skipper's Smokehouse is celebrating its 30th anniversary with concerts by some 30 bands, including a number of longtime favorites. (Click here for a preview.) So today we're honoring one of the venue's most reliable acts.
For a decade, reggae group Impulse has anchored Skipper's weekly "Island Night," which has taken place on Wednesdays for more than 20 years. The laid-back regulars of the Tampa music shanty have enjoyed these West Indies natives' powerful mix of island styles from several Caribbean cultures.
Bassist/bandleader Ted Henderson, drummer/singer Derrick Liverpool and guitarists Russell Henderson and Leroy Guiste formed in 1997 and all trade off singing and harmonizing with ear-pleasing force. In between songs, they joke and talk to the audience. They even sing songs in Spanish and French from time to time.
They've had a few career highlights -- like opening for Sean Kingston at an ESPN the Magazine Super Bowl party in 2009, and playing alongside the likes of Yellowman, Toots and the Maytals and Third World -- but you can always find them at the Skipperdome, ready to relax with a little Red Stripe.
Not that we need to tell you this, but you can see Impulse starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Skipper's. Cover is $5. Click here.
