Artist of the day: JeZ GreW

One thing the Tampa Bay music scene has never lacked: Music critics and writers who double as musicians themselves. The long list includes Creative Loafing’s Scott Harrell (Nessie), the Tampa Tribune’s Curtis Ross (The Peabodies), the Tampa Bay TimesGina Vivinetto (Peabodies) and Eric Deggans (The Voyager Band) and tbt* correspondent Aaron Lepley (November Foxtrot Whiskey), among others.

Add to the list Tony Green. The former Times music critic and his wife, Julia, lead JeZ GreW, a funk-soul fusion outfit that covers everyone from Sly and the Family Stone to Erykah Badu to Bruno Mars to Fishbone to Van Halen to Mother’s Finest. “We do mostly covers, but they are so hip people think we wrote them,” writes Tony, who plays synths and guitar. Julia sings alongside Leah Woodward and Trish Martinez; drummer Philip “Squeak” Walker, guitarist Justin Walker and bassist Miles Hanson round out the group.

JeZ GreW has two shows coming up . On Friday, they’ll be at Gulfport on the Rocks, 5413 Shore Blvd., Gulfport, from 9:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. And at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 25, they’ll be at Gator’s Cafe, 12754 Kingfish Drive, Treasure Island. Click here for more info on those shows.
