Artist of the day: Julianna Zobrist
In honor of the Tampa Bay Rays returning to the MLB playoffs, which start Wednesday, this week we're paying tribute to some of the team's musical influences. Today: Julianna Zobrist.
We've written before about Zobrist, who is the wife of Rays all-star infielder Ben Zobrist. She's a very popular figure online, thanks to posts on Deadspin and elsewhere -- so much so, in fact, that when you type Ben Zobrist's name into Google, the second suggestion that pops up is "Ben Zobrist wife."
Rays fans may not know it, but Julianna is an active and talented singer of indie-tinged alternative pop songs, in the vein of Imogen Heap or Dido. It's Christian music -- Julianna can often be found performing at churches and religious events around Tampa Bay.
A lifelong musician, her career has gotten a boost from her husband, who uses her music as his walk-up music during games at the Trop. For a long time, Ben's at-bat song was The Tree. Recently, he's selected a new song called Only You, from her upcoming debut full-length album.
Julianna said she's completed about six or seven songs for the disc, which she hopes to finish sometime this winter. In the meantime, you can listen to Only You at Julianna's MySpace page.
Ben's walk-up song is pretty much the only crossover between the two Zobrists' careers, though. Last week, Julianna's band accompanied her to a game. "None of them knew anything about baseball, and it was the first game for a few of them, too," she said. "We had a great time."
