Artist of the day: Julie Black
Julie Black's nickname is "Angel for Blues," but the New Port Richey singer sounds as though she'd be just as comfortable performing at a swanky nightclub. Her 2007 CD Call Me Angel for Blues blends Delta blues and piano-driven jazz, with a sound that's equal parts Bettye LaVette, Etta James and even Norah Jones. And Blues Blast Magazine lauded her 2009 release, You Just Might Win, as "jazzy, soulful, rocking, bluesy and oh, so special!"
While Black is a frequent performer at jazz and blues festivals around the area, from the Chasco Fiesta to the Clearwater Sea-Blues Festival, she doesn't make it to Ybor City very often. So it'll be a treat this weekend when she performs at 10 p.m. Saturday at Play in Ybor City. Click here for details on the show.
