Artist of the day: Justin Weller

Tampa singer-songwriter Justin Weller has an extensive background in jazz in the Washington D.C. area, and he was the frontman for cover and original rock bands in Philadelphia. But when he moved to Florida in 1999, he took break from music. For a decade, he simply spent time raising a family in Tampa.

But in 2009, Weller resumed writing music and began hitting singer-songwriter nights at venues like Sacred Grounds and Tre Amici @ The Bunker. Today, he plays a variety of covers and original favorites at public and private events. His music is poppy folk with a slightly alternative flavor, like early Barenaked Ladies (his voice bears a solid resemblance to that of Steven Page) or Automatic For The People-era R.E.M.

On Thursday, check out Weller at Mr. Dunderbak’s, 14929 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa. He’ll perform for free starting at 8 p.m. Click here for details.
