The Improv is normally a place where people can speak their mind. Just not like this.

On Wednesday, Ybor City's comedy club will transform into a hub of spoken word poetry with GIFTED, billed as "Central Florida's largest spoken word event." Leading the event is L.I.F.E., above, a Tampa poet and leader in the area's spoken word scene.

A former rapper and president of Black on Black Rhyme, L.I.F.E. (which stands for Living It For Everyone) is a powerful advocate for spoken word in Tampa Bay, bringing together countless open mics and festivals, and winning awards around the country for his slam performances.

"Poetry remains relevant because the talent is pure. The art is pure," he told tbt* in 2009. "For poets, though, if they ever achieve any significant kind of recognition, it's directly related to their talent. ... It's talent and hard work, both of which are respected by most people."

Wednesday's show will feature a handful of notable Florida poets, including L.I.F.E., Talaam Acey, 13 of Nazareth, Sunni Patterson and King Malachi. The show starts at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Tampa Improv in Centro Ybor. Tickets are $25-$35. Click here for details.
