Artist of the day: Lights at Night
Art and academia collide in Lights at Night, a St. Petersburg indie rock group whose lineup is stocked with music production and theory students at St. Petersburg College.
The lineup -- vocalist Marina Young, guitarists Paul Heyne and Keirsten Johnson, drummer Paul Proco, bassist Brian Messick and multi-instrumentalist Devon Mackinnon -- gelled when some of the members who had played in past bands began asking folks from SPC if they were interested in forming a band. The group's core originally had more of an indie-electronic-rock feel, but it has since been fleshed out with live instrumentation to create a sound that spans an eclectic musical spectrum, sort of like if Rilo Kiley got into chiptune.
On Friday, Lights at Night will perform at the Market on 7th in Ybor City, alongside Al Torchia and the Tattered Saints and Paperback Whale. Click here for details.
The group is also participating in the Rockus Maximus Battle of the Bands this month in Pasco County. They're playing a promo show on March 9 and March 23. Click here for details.
