Artist of the day: Liz Pennock and Dr. Blues
Thirty years ago, Liz Pennock and Paul Shambarger met in Marietta, Ohio. They've been making beautiful music together ever since, both as husband and wife and as the blues duo Liz Pennock and Dr. Blues.
The St. Petersburg couple has been one of Tampa Bay's most popular piano-and-guitar blues combos for more than two decades, releasing a handful of albums and performing several nights each week around Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Their most recent album, Boogie Woogie Staircase, was released in 2008. It's an impressive career, especially when you consider that Pennock, the pianist, was born missing two fingers on each hand.
On Friday, they'll return to a favorite haunt, Skipper's Smokehouse, to open for the legendary Pinetop Perkins. The show is at 8 p.m.; tickets are $15-$20. Click here. And on Saturday, the're performing with the St. Pete Blues Allstars at 8 p.m. at the Palladium in St. Petersburg. Tickets are $12; click here.
In 2003, Dave Scheiber profiled the couple, examining their life together on and off the stage. Click here for his story.
