Artist of the day: Locolism

Whether you're a fan of surf-styled punk or not, you have to be impressed with Locolism in one way: They might be the first Tampa Bay band in space.

Well, sort of. The Tarpon Springs band -- Yannimon Panagiotis and Todd Williams (vocals/guitar/drums), Nick Mahinis (bass) and Greg Rocktoff (sax/guitar) -- has a big fan in Clearwater astronaut Nicole Stott. Stott, Rocktoff's sister-in-law, took some of the band's merch and music with her when she went to space last fall. She played the band's energetic surf-rock while orbit, and took this rather unbelievable photo of one of the band's stickers from the International Space Station.

That photo is the cover iimage of the band's new self-titled debut CD, which Locolism will release at 9 p.m. Saturday with a concert at the Zone Lounge, 121 E Tarpon Ave., Tarpon Springs. It's free to get in, but $10 gets you a copy of the CD and a T-shirt. Click here for the details.
