Artist of the day: The Long Johns

(Welcome to Kickstarter week on Soundcheck! This week we’re spotlighting artists with recent or ongoing projects on Today: Tampa ska-punk band The Long Johns.)

Project: Recording their debut album.

Goal: $750

Raised: $1,373

What $5 got you: A button, sticker and “a personal THANK YOU on a track on the finished album!”

Tampa ska/punk group The Long Johns decided to focus on personalization when creating donation tiers for their project. For just $5, you got a shout-out on the album. For $60, you could get a custom 8.5” by 11” piece of art by Kate Carleton, who did the band’s album cover art. For $75, the Long Johns would cover any song you want and send you the mp3. And for $100, Carleton would make you a custom pair of Vans or TOMS.

The approach worked, as the Long Johns’ modest goal of $750 was funded quickly. “We’ve decided that all funds we get over our initial goal will keep going towards the production of this album, making it far better (and possibly longer) than we originally planned,” the band wrote on Kickstarter.

The group — vocalist Stephanie Summerbell, bassist Josh Dykstra, trombonis Brian Ferreira, guitarist Matt Bartholomay, drummer Woody Bond and saxophonist Justin Larsen — have been around for five years, but this will be their first proper album. Their horn-infused New Wave-style ska is easy to dance to, and has led to plenty of gigs around the southeast.
