Artist of the day: Loud Valley

The name Loud Valley might not mean much to you. But perhaps you’re familiar with Bananafish, who played Tampa Bay on a handful of occasions.

Well, they’re the same band. Regardless of how you might have felt about the name “Bananafish” (we didn’t care for it), the band is worth checking out. Bananafish sounds like the name of a ska band, but the Orlando sextet plays moody symphonic folk-pop in the vein of Bon Iver or Fleet Foxes. The group — Travis Reed, Artie Burer, Michael Serrin, Joey Davoli, Melanie Valentich and Dominic Vincent — adopted Loud Valley as their new name last fall, and haven’t looked back.

This week’s mini-tour of Florida celebrates the release of the band’s first EP, of which Orlando Weekly says combines “haunting harmonizing, ersatz brass and wallowing waltzes that both hypnotize and distract (all the better to wallop you when the chorus charges in.”

On Thursday, Loud Valley performs with Gainesville’s Oh Fortuna and Tampa Bay’s own The Sun Society at 9 p.m. at New World Brewery. Tickets are $6. Click here.
