Artist of the day: Matt Also Adam
(All week on Soundcheck, we’re spotlighting the videos of Ryan Zarra, the director behind St. Pete Beat. His lush videos capture local performers in unusual venues, and also let their musicianship and personality shine through in unexpected ways. Today: Matt Also Adam.)
Matt Walker and Adam Haar list influences ranging from System of a Down and Nine Inch Nails to the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers. So you might not expect their band, Matt Also Adam, to sound like a more easygoing Avett Brothers or Black Keys, offering warm, bluesy takes on bluegrass and Americana, from the shuffling folk of Gone For Good and the dusty southern funk of The Chase.
Walker (guitar and vocals) and Haar (banjo and vocals) met during their first year at Eckerd College and began covering other artists before writing their own music.
Their St. Pete Beat session was one of the series’ most memorable, as it featured the duo performing a version of The Chase on board downtown St. Pete’s Pier trolley. The result is a freewheeling, laughter-filled jam session on wheels, with an appreciative, if a little surprised, audience of trolley-goers there for the ride. Even a couple of passersby on the street got into it (see about 5:07).
