Artist of the day: Melanie Minyon
By day, Melanie Todd manages Hambuger Mary's restaurant in Centro Ybor. Monday nights, the manager turns diva bingo caller at the restaurant's Drag Queen Bingo night.
Otherwise, she’s Melanie Minyon, a transsexual who began identifying as a woman after graduating high school. Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Minyon worked the female impersonator circuit, from Texas to Florida. In the Tampa Bay area, it was standing room only at El Goya nightclub, which became Tracks and then closed in 1996. These days, she calls bingo in Ybor and lip syncs to rock and roll and country music at Blur nightclub near her Dunedin condo.
Hamburger Mary's Draq Queen Bingo nights start at 7:30 p.m. Mondays; it's $10 for 10 games. For more on Melanie Minyon, click here for Amy Scherzer's profile.
